Epiphany

Galette des Rois

The Epiphany is a Christian celebration commemorating the visit of the three kings when Jesus was born. On this day, French homes eat the traditional Galette des Rois (Kings’ cake). This French cake consists of flaky puff pastry layers with a dense center of frangipane or apple.

The Epiphany is on 6 January. However, in those countries like France, where it is not a public holiday, this feast’s celebration is fixed for the Sunday closest to 6 January.

You will find the Galette des Rois everywhere in bakeries and pâtisseries in Paris (and France) during all of January. Actually, the first Galettes appear in the boulangeries in December!

It is also common that somebody brings a Galette des Rois to the office, so we all end up eating many pieces of galettes : -)
