Versailles is a city located southwest of Paris, on the outskirts of the French capital (also known as the Grande Couronne). More precisely, Versailles is located in the department of Yvelines (78), and the distance from Paris to Versailles is 18 km (11,2 miles).

Paris to Versailles Guided Tour with Transportation

Versailles Palace France

Some of the Versailles guided tours include transportation from Paris to Versailles on an air-conditioned coach or a minivan.

Usually, these half-day or full-day tours come with a knowledgeable guide, and they are also a good way to skip the line at Versailles as group tours enter the Palace through a special entrance for groups.

Versailles guided tours can be private or shared and with small or big groups. Shared tours depart from a location in central Paris, and they use a minivan for small groups and a coach for bigger groups. Private groups (usually up to 8 people) offer pick-up service from your hotel and use a minivan, but they can also use a luxury car (e.g., Mercedes) if your group is just you or two people.

Paris to Versailles by Train

train station in Paris

Getting to Versailles from Paris by train is very easy. The city of Versailles has three train stations: Versailles Château Rive Gauche, Versailles Chantiers, and Versailles Rive Droite. Then, there’s a bit of walking from the train station to the Palace or the Gardens.

> Versailles Château Rive Gauche is a train station part of the RER C train system. Versailles Château Rive Gauche is the closest train station to the Palace of Versailles; from this station, the Palace is only a 10-minute walk. You can take the Paris to Versailles RER C from different stations in central Paris: Champs de Mars, Invalides, and Musée d’Orsay. RER C has two branches in the direction of Versailles so don’t take any train. Take only the trains that go to Versailles Château Rive-Gauche station (terminus).

> Versailles Chantiers is a train station part of the RER C train system and Transilien N train system (SNCF). This is not an interesting train station for getting to the Château de Versailles or Gardens because you can get closer to the Palace if you stop at Versailles Château Rive Gauche.

> Versailles Rive Droite is a train station part of the Transilien L train system (SNCF). From this train station, it’s a 20-minute walk to the Palace, but there’s a gate to access the Gardens even closer. This is the most convenient train station if you are staying in Paris’ Right Bank. You can take the Transilien line L Paris to Versailles from Gare Saint Lazare train station, which is located in Paris 8.

Should you consider using Uber or a taxi to get to Versailles from Paris?

A one-way trip between Paris and Versailles by Uber or taxi will typically cost you a minimum of around 35€ – 50€, depending on your specific Paris location, and assuming there are no major traffic jams (but you shouldn’t assume this).

How to Get from Versailles to Paris after the Night Fountain Show

Versailles Gardens Fountain Show

Transportation from Versailles to Paris after the Fountains Night Show is complicated. The last RER train from Versailles to Paris runs until about midnight, a connection which is doable but very tight, especially because everybody waits until the end of the Grand Finale to leave the grounds.

Avoid the hassle of running to catch the last (and hyper-crowded) train by booking private transfer from Versailles to your hotel in Paris.

You can also decide to spend the night in one of the hotels near Château de Versailles and use the second day to visit the city or explore the grounds of Versailles by bike (you can rent one inside the park) with a picnic in the park.

So there you have it, the Paris to Versailles transportation guide with everything you need to know on how to get from Paris to Versailles Palace smoothly.
