2. Paris Style Basics for Men (What You Actually Need to Know)

Paris Packing List Men

The Parisian man wants to have his own style without showing off. He does not wear unusual colors or logos. There are no big watches, no ostentatious accessories, no flags, no baseball caps.

Also, Parisian men never have a ‘total look’ from one brand. For example, they can easily mix expensive clothes with a vintage belt found on a flea market or a cashmere sweater with old jeans.

Men’s fashion in Paris tends to be slimmer and more tailored than what Americans are often used to. Suits, shirts, and coats are usually well-fitted, with a strong emphasis on tailoring. Slim-fit jeans are also very common on Parisian streets.

Finally, men love to layer (putting a shirt on underneath a sweater, which is underneath a coat …), creating effortlessly cool outfits as if they have chosen them with no thought at all. Always make sure every layer can be seen; otherwise, there is no point in layering!

The Brands

What men wear in Paris usually depends on the budget. Parisian men on a budget usually shop brands like The Kooples, Sandro, Zara, Massimo Dutti, or Uniqlo. Paris outfits for men with higher budgets include brands like Ralph Lauren (yes, men in Paris like Ralph!), Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, and Hugo Boss.

For this guide, I looked for quality brands available on Amazon US, Canada, and Europe.

3. What to Wear in Paris – Fall Fashion for Men [2026]

Paris in the fall still has nice temperatures (maximums of 11°C to 21°C), and there are still some sunny days (pack your sunglasses!) and blue skies. If you visit Paris during the fall, you need to be prepared for anything!

Layering is essential, and your Paris packing list will definitely include a jacket or light sweater with a basic cotton t-shirt underneath.

Items like a foldable umbrella will be your best allies during rainy days in Paris, so don’t forget to include them in your packing list.

Before you leave for Paris, check the weather forecast and adjust your packing list if needed. This is especially important if you’re visiting in September, as the weather can feel more like summer than fall. If that’s the case, check out my summer packing guide instead.

4. What to Wear in Paris – Winter Fashion for Men [2026-2027]

The weather in Paris during the winter is cold, but it never gets as cold as in Northern Europe (minimums of 2°C to 7°C and only 4 to 5 hours of light). Snow in Paris is rare; it may snow for a few days in January or February, but it doesn’t last.

Men’s outfits for Paris in winter should include a warm jacket, a warm scarf, and a wool hat. Cool winter outfits include merino pullovers with a shirt underneath and perhaps a good wool-blend coat.

Good leather Chelsea boots with merino wool socks will keep your feet warm and cozy.

5. How to Combine These Items (3 Simple Outfits)

You have the items. Here’s how to actually wear them:

Outfit 1: Daytime (Museums, Walking, Cafés)

  • Long-sleeve t-shirt OR lightweight sweater
  • Dark jeans or trousers
  • Comfortable sneakers
  • Light jacket (fall) OR warm coat (winter)
  • Crossbody bag
  • Light scarf (fall) OR wool scarf (winter)

That’s it. If you’re wearing a sweater, keep the layers simple underneath. You’ll be comfortable indoors and warm outside.

Outfit 2: Evening (Casual Dinner, Drinks)

  • Button-down shirt
  • Dark trousers or dark jeans
  • Sweater layered over the shirt (optional)
  • Clean sneakers or Chelsea boots
  • Light jacket (fall) OR warm coat (winter)

Simple, clean layers always look appropriate in Paris. You don’t need a suit – just clothes that fit well.

Outfit 3: Cold or Rainy Day

  • Long-sleeve t-shirt
  • Sweater (merino, cashmere blends)
  • Dark jeans or trousers
  • 1 tailored wool coat or insulated jacket
  • Comfortable waterproof sneakers or Chelsea boots
  • Thermal layers or tights under pants (if you’re mostly outdoors)
  • Warm gloves
  • Hat or beanie (if you get cold easily)
  • Warm scarf (wool or cashmere)
  • Foldable umbrella

This is the outfit you’ll probably wear the most in winter. The layers let you stay warm outside without overheating once you’re indoors.

What I actually see guys wearing in Paris:

Dark jeans or trousers, a sweater, white or neutral sneakers, and a wool coat once it gets cold. In early fall, it’s usually just a light jacket over a t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt. Most men in Paris stick to neutral colors, simple layers, and comfortable shoes. Nobody’s overthinking it.

6. Shoes to Wear in Paris for Men

For sightseeing in Paris, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Clean, minimal sneakers work well and fit in with everyday city style.

For evenings or slightly dressier occasions, leather shoes in neutral tones like black or brown are a classic choice. In Paris, locals tend to buy high-quality shoes and take good care of them, rather than owning multiple pairs of lower-quality ones.

A good rule of thumb is to bring two pairs: one comfortable pair of sneakers for walking, and one smarter pair for going out. They’ll easily match most outfits during your stay.

And one small tip by a local: leave the white athletic socks at home!

7. FAQ: Men’s Fashion in Paris

What shoes do men wear in Paris?

Minimalist sneakers dominate (Adidas Samba, Gazelle, Stan Smith; Common Projects; Veja), followed by loafers and espadrilles in summer. Athletic shoes for actual sports only (gym or running the Paris Marathon). Leather dress shoes rare except formal events.

What do men wear to dinner in Paris?

Depends on restaurant tier. Nice bistros: Button-down + trousers/jeans + clean sneakers. Michelin-starred: add a blazer and dress shoes – or suit. Check the restaurant’s website for the dress code. The difference between Paris and the US: even casual restaurants expect you to look put-together.

Are baseball caps acceptable in Paris?

Technically yes (it’s not illegal!), realistically no, if you don’t wish to be targeted as an American tourist immediately. Most Parisians wear simple beanies or vintage hats that add a bit of personality to an outfit.

Can I wear athletic clothing in Paris?

Only for actual athletics. Gym clothes stay at gym. Joggers, hoodies, branded sportswear immediately mark you as tourist/non-Parisian. Exception: if going for run in park, obviously athletic gear is fine.

Do I need a heavy winter coat?

If you’re visiting between November and February, yes. A warm wool coat or insulated coat is one of the few items worth bringing because you’ll wear it every day.

Do men wear puffer jackets in Paris?

Yes. You’ll see plenty of locals wearing simple, neutral-colored puffers, especially in winter. Wool coats are common too, particularly in central Paris.

Should I pack thermal layers?

If you’re visiting in December, January, or February, thermal tops or leggings can make long days outdoors much more comfortable, especially if you’re sensitive to the cold.

Are waterproof shoes necessary?

Not essential, but they’re a good idea if rain is in the forecast. Leather boots or water-resistant sneakers are usually enough for sightseeing.

How do I dress for indoor heating?

Wear layers. Museums, cafés, and restaurants are heated, so it’s easy to remove a sweater or scarf once you’re inside.

Where can I buy these items in Paris if I forgot something?

  • Budget: Zara (everywhere), H&M, Uniqlo (Marais, Opéra)
  • Mid-range: Sandro, The Kooples (Saint-Germain, Marais)
  • Department stores: Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché (full range of brands)
  • Affordable French: Sézane Homme (online + stores)

What size should I buy? French sizing confuses me.

French sizing runs smaller than US. If you’re typically US Medium, try French Large. Always try on if possible. Focus on fit at shoulders/chest (can’t alter) rather than length/waist (can alter).
